A KickStarter project has raised $826,825 (thus far) to recreate a replica of the NASA Golden Record.

What is NASA’s Golden Record?

The NASA Golden Record is a 12-inch gold plated copper disk, which contains the story of Earth. This includes pictures from everyday life, sounds of the wind, greetings in a whole bunch of languages, and whole lot more.

As part of the Voyager Interstellar Program, NASA put identical copies of the Golden Record on board Voyager 1 and Voyager 2.

Only a select few have been able to acquire an actual real copy of the golden disc from NASA. One such person is US President Jimmy Carter. Apparently, NASA didn’t want to distribute these discs to people who can later sell them for personal profit. And as the story goes, even the designer himself didn’t get a copy!

The fellas on KickStarter aren’t offering gold plated copper discs, but for $98 you can get a vinyl box set replica.
