Anicius Boethius was boring in the Western Roman Empire during a time when the Ostrogothic Kingdom had taken control of the area that is present day Italy. He was orphaned at an early age and was brought up by a wealthy Roman family of aristocrats.

Boethius was a Christian and well educated. He spoke fluent Greek and had a well rounded knowledge of both Latin and Greek philosophy.

Boethius focused on translating and analyzing ancient Greek texts, especially those of Aristotle.
